In the Grecian story of Medusa, when Perseus slays Medusa in the water, her blood seeped into the Red Sea creating hard red coral. Even after her demise she was affecting the world around her.

In the centuries since coral has been believed to hold protective and empowering properties, and to this day still symbolizes life force.
